Saratoga Race Course is the gem of the New York Racing Association (NYRA). Sports Illustrated called it “one of the greatest sporting venues in the world.” Located in Saratoga Springs, New York, the track draws people from all over the world for the racing and the other amenities that Saratoga has to offer.
Saratoga horse racing began in 1863, just one month after the Battle of Gettysburg. At that time, Saratoga Springs was already famous for its mineral baths and a place for the wealthy to get away during the warm summer months.
When Aqueduct racetrack was rebuilt in the 1960s, there was a movement to stop all other horse racing in the state. In 1962, New York Gov. Averill Harriman, signed “The Harriman Law,” which mandated at least 24 racing days each year at Saratoga.
During the summer racing season, the population of Saratoga Springs swells to almost 100,000 people, more than triple the number of residents. It is home to the national Museum of Racing , which holds some historic horse racing memorabilia. Saratoga Springs is a truly beautiful city with hundreds of historic places and landmarks.
Saratoga’s motto is “health, history and horses.”
