Belmont Park holds a special place in racing. The Belmont Stakes is the third leg in horse racing’s Triple Crown (along with the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes). Therefore, it is at Belmont Park, that all the Triple Crown winners are crowned. Many of racing’s most electrifying moments occurred at Belmont Park, including Secretariat’s runaway victory to win the Triple Crown in 1973 and Big Brown’s failing bid to complete the crown in 2008. These moments have exposed more people to the sport and horse handicapping.
The grand opening of Belmont Park was in 1905. It was founded by August Belmont II and William C. Whitney, a former Sec. of the Navy. It resides in Nassau County, next to the borough of Queens, in a place once known as Foster’s Meadow.
Belmont was rebuilt in 1963 through 1968. During those years, The Belmont Stakes was run at Aqueduct, about 8 miles away in Queens. It is the largest horse racing track in the United States in circumference, at 1.5 miles.
